Happy Monday friends! I hope you had a nice weekend. Weekends are so precious for me. Getting to spend time with my daughter and husband are the best. Even when they are busy I always feel so relaxed at the end of the day just being with them.
I have a very exciting post for you today. Bess Bee Healthy is the author of the Bess Bee Healthy blog. I found her on Instagram and have been stalking her (in a not scary way, I promise) ever since. She posts some of the prettiest, yummiest, smoothies I have ever seen. I was excstatic when she agreen to do a guest post on Maxfitgirl. Hi, my name is Bess B. and I am the author of the Bess Bee Healthy blog. I live on an island off of the coast of Charleston, SC. I am a wife and mother of two young children, and I am also a runner. I work full-time as a school psychologist.
Green smoothies are my passion, because they satisfy my appetite in a healthy way, are a great way to get fruits and veggies in my diet every day, and they make healthy eating so much fun.
Green smoothies help balance my diet with vegetables and fruit.
As a runner, I have a tremendous appetite. Right now, I am also breastfeeding, so my appetite is even more increased! I enjoying eating a lot and I don’t restrict my diet; however, I want to maintain a healthy weight, and make sure I get the vitamins and nutrients I need. Therefore, I am sure to eat tons of whole, fresh fruit and veggies every single day. Green smoothies are a great way to get these in.
When it comes to vegetables, because of bland taste and texture issues, eating a lot of fresh, whole vegetables every day is not always easy. However, green smoothies take otherwise unappealing veggies, like spinach and kale, and blend them into a dessert-like treat. I have been thrilled to learn that, by blending with a banana, you can stick almost any veggie in a smoothie and the smoothie will still be delicious. Whole fruit is easier and more fun to eat than whole veggies to me (because it’s so sweet), but I always aim to pack more into my diet, and green smoothies make this super-easy, too.
Green smoothies help use up veggies and fruits before they go bad.
Many people complain about the cost of buying tons of fresh veggies and fruits because they spoil before they are eaten. Green smoothies are a great cure for this. I use green smoothies to consume my leftover tossed salads, as well as celery, carrots, and avocado before they go bad in the crisper. Green smoothies are also a great way to use random over-ripe fruit instead of throwing it away (tip: freeze your ripe fruit to use later).
Green Smoothies help curb over-eating.
Because I have such a large appetite, a key to keeping my weight under control is to avoid cravings for sweets and over-eating. After work, green smoothies are the perfect treat, because they fill me up, provide my body with the fat, calories, and vitamins it needs, and the smoothie helps hold me off of eating an actual meal until I can join my husband for dinner later in the evening. I am also very susceptible to overeating sweets. Therefore, I make green smoothies that are as delicious as milkshakes. Ice cream is no longer formidable when I have a huge, frosty, sweet, creamy smoothie available. I am never left feeling deprived.
Green Smoothies are fun.
Green smoothies are fun because you can create a treat for yourself that’s as delicious as dessert without the guilt. And, unlike, baking a cake, you can’t mess up a green smoothie. Pretty much every combination of fruit, greens, and liquid tastes amazing. Green smoothies are also fun because you can get creative! Express your creativity by picking different combinations of fruits that you think will taste great together. You can add interesting toppings, like unsweetened coconut flakes, chia seeds, cacao nibs, and goji berries… the list is endless. Arrange the toppings to make a picture-perfect smoothie—or enjoy your green mess as-is in all of its blended glory! Enjoy the process!
Tips to Create a Delicious Green Smoothie.
*Always use at least ½ banana: it covers any “green” taste and evens out your smoothie texture (substitutions include avocado and silken tofu)
*My favorite green is bagged spinach, for its mild taste and pretty color. You can also use kale or mustard greens. I’ve even used lettuce from leftover salad!
*Unsweetened almondmilk is the perfect everyday liquid base for smoothies (it’s delicious and low-calorie; you can sweet your smoothie in other ways)
*The banana itself will sweeten your smoothie; you can also add dates or stevia to make it even sweeter
*Adding avocado will make your smoothie extra-thick and creamy
*Freeze your fruit for an extra-cold and thick smoothie (cut it up first, though) or add 1 cup of crushed ice
*Buy out-of-season fruits in the frozen section. Stock your freezer and you’ll always have fruit on hand
*Keep it simple! Just pick one or two fruits (in addition to the banana) for your smoothie. (Or, a just-banana smoothie is delicious, too!)
*Add cinnamon. This is really good in just-banana smoothies.
*It’s OK if your smoothie looks gross. That’s the fun: it looks like green mush, but tastes like a milkshake!
*To make your smoothie taste like a milkshake, and keep you fuller longer, add protein powder. Whey (milk-based) protein is absolutely delicious! If you are vegan, try a plant-based protein powder.
*Toppings are fun, but not necessary. Don’t be intimidated by all of those strange-sounding toppings you see on smoothie pictures, such as on Instagram. (Ex. hempseed, chia, bee pollen, goji berries, etc.). These healthy-super foods add fun crunch and make pretty pictures, but they are often expensive and hard to acquire. So, if you don’t have them don’t be discouraged. Your smoothie is deliciously healthy just the way it is!
*Have fun!!! Again, you can’t mess it up. Get creative. Blend away and enjoy!
Banana-Blueberry Green Smoothie!
*1/2 cup blueberries
*3 tablespoons avocado
*1 cup spinach
*1 cup unsweetened almondmilk
*1 scoop of protein powder
*1 cup of crushed ice
*optional* add a couple of dates or stevia for extra-sweetness
*optional* top with unsweetened coconut flakes, sliced banana, and whole blueberries

You guys, I tried her above smoothie recipe this morning for breakfast and it was delicous.
While mine was definitely not as pretty as hers it was just as tastey! My husband, who prefers not to “drink” his food even liked it which is a HUGE compliment.
